Arts Council Tokyo (Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture) and NPO Ikimachi Club will hold “Kagurazaka Street Stage O-edo Tour 2023” on May 20 and 21, 2023 in the Kagurazaka area of Tokyo. Kagurazaka Street Stage O-edo Tour is a festival where various traditional Japanese performing arts can be enjoyed on the streets, in the grounds of temples and shrines, in Noh theaters, and in long-established kappo restaurants in Kagurazaka, an area that retains the atmosphere of Edo but is also reminiscent of Paris. The festival will feature artists with ties to the area, young and old, who are active in the forefront of traditional performing arts such as music, storytelling, and performance. This year’s program on the street is back for the first time in four years. Popular programs such as Shinnai Nagashi (flowing down stone-paved alleyways while playing the shamisen), Iori Uta from the Johana Hikiyama Festival invited from Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, and performances and performances on the main street will return. Visitors can enjoy with the unique culture of Kagurazaka through performances on shamisen, “Koto” Japanese harp, “Shakuhachi” bamboo flute, and other traditional instruments, storytelling performances such as “Kodan” and “Rokyoku”, physical expressions such as Noh, “Tezuma” Japanese traditional magic, and “Daikagura” Japanese traditional juggling and lion dance, and a variety of other traditional performing arts, as well as Geisha Ladies entertainment with rakugo storytellers. There will also be a variety of programs for parents and children to enjoy together, such as The Edo marionette group, Picture cards show, and hands-on experience with the shamisen and other traditional musical instruments. For two days of festivities, visitors can connect with traditional Japanese performing arts in Kagurazaka, a town where traditional culture is a part of daily life. This is a festival that can be easily enjoyed by people who are not familiar with traditional performing arts, the younger generation, and even people from overseas. We look forward to seeing you there.
Robert Campbell will be the ambassador.
Robert Campbell, who has a deep knowledge of Japanese culture, will continue his role as an ambassador to guide visitors through the world of traditional performing arts. We will present a performance of Nagauta, “Soukyoku” Japanese harp, and “Koudan” storytelling at Yarai Noh theater through the video to help visitors deeply enjoy Kagurazaka Street Stage O-edo Tour.
